Quicksilver MX tube reinforcing pulugs

Tube plug for tail brace tube.  The groves are filled with poluyurithane glue and the plug is pressed into the end of the tube.

Then a slightly undersize 1/4" hole is cross drilled 1/2 way from each side of the tube using the original holes as a drill guide.  The 1/4" bolts will press fit the hole.

These are made in the lathe from UHMWPE plastic rod.

UHMWPE has the highest abrasion resistance of all the thermoplastic. High impact even at low temperature. Self lubrication. Fatigue resistance. A breaking strength of 5600PSI.  AND it is one of the lower cost plastics.

A close up of the tail where the tubes come togeather showing the plugs installed.  A 3/16" hole was drilled 1" up from the end for and AN3 bolt but the glue does a nice job without the bolt.

The 1/4" AN bolt holding the U brackets was shortened and cross drilled for a nut and saftey wire.

Right main spar root tube with a 3" long plug inserted inside double tube. It is long enough to catch the holes for the attaching bolt, tapped for a 1/4" bolt in place of the 3/16" rivet for the wing fabric and the bolt that attaches the diagnal compression tube to the tail attachment on the rear spar.   It is glued in with epoxy or polyurithane glue.

A simular plug is in the rear spar and on the left wing.
